We traveled from Miami to Rio de Janeiro for full days January 13 to January 17, 2010. We stayed at the Best Western Sol Hotel right on the Ipanema Beach. A wonderful taxi driver, Saverio Gringo (yes--Gringo!, but not A Gringo!) met us at the airport.he spoke English very well and became much more than just a taxi driver, but became a real friend. We took several days trips with him and got to see the real Rio de Janeiro from a local standpoint and got to appreciate local activities, restaurants, and the way of life.
Here is the website or the accessible taxis in Rio:
The Best Western Hotel was right on the famous Ipanema Beach. Our room faced the ocean and was on the second floor. The room had a terrific wheelchair accessible bathroom with a roll in shower. The room came with two twin beds which was perfect for two men traveling together and there was plenty of room for all of our miscellaneous stuff. The hotel served a complete breakfast every morning. The dining room was on the first floor (above the ground floor) and was situated so that we could eat breakfast while staring out at the morning beach.
In the afternoon (or really any time) we could just stroll right across the main avenue and there was a drink stand right on beautiful black-and-white walkway along the beach. Grabbing a beer at any of the beach stands was quite cheap and seemed to be a hangout for all the locals in between sunning themselves and playing beach volleyball.
This is just a partial update, there's much more to come with plenty of pictures.
